LORETO PELAYO, JR.

Loreto Pelayo Jr. is a guitarist, composer, arranger, and bandleader. A life-long listener of instrumental music, in his late-teens, he became a proponent of straight-ahead jazz after discovering the music through recordings online. Noticing a lack of straight-ahead jazz in Belize, in late-2019 he formed the Loreto Pelayo Trio which he continues to perform with to this day.

Loreto is deeply committed to learning and sharing the jazz tradition. His influences range from traditional to modern, and has studied privately with Spencer Hoefert and Pasquale Grasso. Given his mission to develop a scene for jazz appreciation in Belize, Loreto has performed with various jazz musicians such as Russell Hall, Nathan Graybeal, Ryan Devlin, Katie Martucci, Josh Dunn, Esteban Castro, Ray Kaneko, and Dalton Mumphrey by inviting them to perform with his trio in Belize.

Loreto has performed throughout Belize as a solo instrumentalist, bandleader, as well as a sideman. Loreto regularly visits New York City and Philadelphia to immerse himself in the living jazz tradition.

I've played what people call "jazz", and I've played with Loreto -- and playing with Loreto is a totally different level from playing with anyone else [in Belize].
The fact that he has become an ambassador for the music means something to me.
Loreto Pelayo is an incredible jazz guitarist with facility, flexibility, and feeling. His playing is deeply expressive, and every note makes you feel that much closer to what he has to say.
It is remarkable that even in though he is in his early 20's, Loreto has surpassed his contemporaries [in Belize] who are much older than him - by far.
Loreto is mysterious.
